Ali's Picks: Eebee's Adventures: The New Kid on the DVD Block

Eebee's Adventures DVD's

Move over, Baby Einstein: A puppet named Eebee is shaking things up!  At giggle, we're always looking for books, DVDs and music that are smart, unique, and appropriately "giggle." So we were excited to find this collection of developmental DVDs that raise the bar with their fun, insightful and simple lessons. This extremely well thought-out line incorporates music, language and vivid colors to engage babies and teach them about their world, and it's all built around a character named Eebee.

Eebee doesn't use repetition and memorization to get his point across; he teaches through everyday play. The philosophy behind Eebee is that simple experiences within the baby's reality create a far better framework for learning than something they're unlikely to encounter in everyday life. Instead of watching dolphins jumping in an ocean to classical music, babies get to see Eebee play in a laundry basket (much more relatable since not many babies have pet dolphins).

So far Eebee's Adventures include All In A Day's Play, Exploring Real Stuff, and Figuring Things Out.  Eebee's is such a great idea, there should definitely be more to come. We love activities that encourage babies' development, and that’s why we love Eebee!

Glowing Room Thermometer by Grobag Egg

Grobag Egg Thermometer

Blue for too cold and red for too warm, and yellow is just right.  Between 61 and 67 degrees Fahrisenheit is what Grobag Egg says is just right for your baby ideal sleeping room temperature range.  We actually just like the easy way to tell if your room is too hot or too cold.  Plus the Grobag Egg is a nice night light too.

Ali's Picks: Oxo Candela Nightlights

Candela Nightlights

Clever, colorful, practical, and cute—these portable lights emit a gentle glow whenever and wherever you need them most. They turn on automatically when lifted from their charger, which means no switches to fuss with in the middle of the night. And they give you up to eight hours of illumination away from their base.

Their ambient light makes them perfect for nursing or diaper changes—much more soothing than flipping on the overhead lights. Best of all, since they don't need to stay plugged in, they can be taken "to go," making them a great toddler option for late-night trips to the bathroom (or into mom and dad's room). They'll even switch on automatically when the electricity goes out, making them a soothing presence during thunderstorms.

As far as nightlights go, they just don't come any more practical or versatile. And with their fun shape and contemporary colors, they'll brighten up your child's room in more ways then one!

All-in-One Beaba Babycook Here, But Not BPA-Safe?

Beaba Babycook

Over the weekend, friends of ours with a six-month old daughter excitedly told us that the Beaba Babycook was now available from France at Williams Sonoma.  We've known about Beaba since last year, but haven't written about it because you couldn't buy it yet in the US, so we were glad to hear that it was now available.

At first glance. Babycook is pretty cool - it steams, blends, warms, and defrosts homemade baby food all in one unit.  Then, I found Wholesome Baby Food is reporting that the Babycook container and interior cooking bowl is made of polycarbonate, which means it is not BPA-safe.  One reader goes on to call Beaba and reports that Beaba is aware of this and has no plans to change to a BPA-free plastic.  Wow, that doesn't seem like the way to capture US family households wanting to be BPA-free - especially when it comes to our babies.

So, now our anticipation of reporting about Beaba Babycook finally arriving in the US is not so exciting.  As for our household and 10-month baby, we're just happy steaming food on our stovetop and using our Braun Handblender.

Ali's Picks: The Bloom Nano Highchair

Nano Highchair by Bloom Baby

Compact, Stylish and Easy on the Wallet

Why is the understated Nano from Bloom one of my top picks in highchair design? Although it doesn't boast the uber-modern look of the new hydraulic lift chairs, the Nano is still a design "best of" in my book for its simplicity and innovation.

Streamlined and diminutive, this European-designed highchair takes up a lot less room than its fully-loaded counterparts. Best of all, it folds flat for easy storage between meals (or between children).

Upholstered in easy-care micro-leather that could pass for real leather, it comes in fresh, contemporary colors. And the sleek simplicity of the design allows it to fit beautifully into any decor.

The Nano is a great solution for space-constrained families. But anyone who loves great design can appreciate its simple, minimalist style.

Stashing Your Stroller with StrollAway

Metrotots' StrollAway

Metrotots' StrollAway is right on the money when they state on their website:

It's huge, it cost you a fortune, and it's a neccessity. But where do you put it? The neighbors scowl if you leave it in the hallway (illegal they say, as it's a fire hazard). It folds, but the fact that it's on wheels makes it impossible to stay upright in a closet, and at about $1,000.00 a square foot in this city, it's costing you a fortune in lost space!

Even though most of us don't live in a tiny Manhattan apartment at $1,000 a square foot, StrollAway makes it nice to get that stroller out of your entry hall or falling over when you open the closet door.

Adaptable and Safe Baby Furniture Prototypes

Changing Table Prototypes

Could your changing table and high chairs be safer?  French designers Frank & Stanimira Rafaschieri think so.  They've created two children's furniture prototypes that address the inherent safety issues of two daily tasks of parenting - feeding and changing diapers.  These prototypes show designs that are thoughtful of the developmental stages of a child's growth and abilities, which may sensibly result in less accidents when placing children at unsafe heights.
