Book of the Week via Design Mom: 365 Penguins

365 Penguins

If there was a parallel design blog universe for Coochicoos, then Design Mom would be in ours.  We love all of their design picks for modern parents and this week, you just have to love the graphics of their Book of the Week Pick, 365 Penguins.

Everyday for a year a new penguin arrives at one family's home, beginning on January 1st.   Why are they coming? Who is sending them?

How Do You Make Dinosaur Soup? Ask a kid.

Dinosaur Soup Book Cover

We all know that our kids say the funniest things, and if you asked them how to make their favorite dishes, you'd get all sorts of answers.  Probably even rolling on the floor funny.

For the upcoming book, Dinosaur Soup(And Other Dubious Recipes Written by Children), the publishers are asking you for your child's recipe submissions.  Simply ask them to write or tell you how to make his or her favorite dish.  Make no corrections and send them in to recipes [at] bobsyouruncle.com.  All submissions will get a free copy of the book, and winners will get an additional special prize.

Kitchen for Kids: A Cookbook for the Grade School Chef

Kitchen for Kids Cookbook

If your kids have an interest in cooking and helping out in the kitchen, then Kitchen for Kids is a great way to get them hands-on experience with cooking and baking from a kid's perspective.  Recipes are written so there is easy preparation with no electric mixers or knives needed, ingredients are common and easy to work with, and the resulting dish is kid-sized.  What's more, every recipe is photographed - which some adult cookbooks don't even have.  And while your supervision is recommended, the cookbook's introduction promises that "you will be pleasantly surprised at how much children will be able to do by themselves."  Sounds like a great way to inspire a cooked meal for mom and dad.

M. Night Shyamalan reads his bedtime story - Lady in the Water

ladyinthewater.jpg

Upcoming movie, Lady in the Water, was originally written as a bedtime story for M. Night Shyamalan's own children.  Now on Amazon.com, you can view a video of Mr. Shyamalan reading an excerpt from the book, plus his own commentary about writing this children's book.  He also shares how he wrote Lady in the Water to be a companion piece to the movie and not a retelling of the movie.  Lady in the Water opens on July 21.

What designers read to their children?

johnpaulgeorge.jpg

New media designer, author, and speaker Cameron Moll recently wrote about his favorite new children's book - "Of the dozens and dozens of children’s books we’ve bought over the years, none have been purchased solely with a selfish desire to call one my own. Until today, that is."

That book is "John, Paul, George & Ben" by Lane Smith.  Judging by the screenshots that Moll has posted, he makes a compelling case based on the mix of illustrations, layout, graphics, and of course, story.  I especially love the wide range of facial expressions and emotion in the illustrations, and the varying sizes of type that support the story and characters.  What favorite books do you love?
