Houses of the Year - World Edition
Take a peek into the nominees for World Architecture News House of the Year that includes projects from around the world. Some of the more interesting ones are the Nautilus House in Mexico where kids will think more amusement park than home, the Acrylic House in Japan for a family with 3 children, a family home in Croatia, and an Oakland Hills house with bay views for empty nesters - so we all have something to look forward to.

Kid's Rooms and Family Spaces by Sixx Design
Cortney and Bob Novogratz is a husband and wife design team behind Sixx Design. They work and live in New York City while also raising their six children that include two sets of twins. A majority of their work is purchasing rundown properties, and then rehabbing them to resell. Since they live in their properties with their children while doing the design work, many of their remodeled properties naturally become family homes. We talked to them recently about their work and creating a family home.
What's important to you when designing a room/home for children?
First of all, we are not big into clutter. Kids don't need all that stuff. They need room to move around and play and do their home work, etc. If you have art in the kid's rooms like we do, make sure it is framed so they can't destroy it. Plexiglass is a life-saver in that area. We actually had a seventh kid, but he was sent to the monastery for ruining a painting!!! We have all four of our boys in one room. They only live together for a short time in their life. Keep them young. Their childhood goes fast.

Picks from Kind & Jugend by Rebecca Finell
Rebecca Finell, designer and co-founder of Boon, recently returned from the Kind & Jugend Children's Show in Cologne, Germany. As with many large international trade shows, the diversity and number of products on display are overwhelming, and we're lucky to have Rebecca tell us about a few of her favorite finds.
The Oolaalaa GlobeA giant sitball made of memory foam that quickly returns to its original shape when you stand up. The Oolaalaa globe is covered in a high-resolution digital print that is so precise, you can actually read the names of rivers and cities. I sat on one at the show and it is more supportive than you would think it could be. It's a great concept to help kids learn geography and I love that every purchase benefits a good cause.
The Leander BedI saw this bed last year and it is still at the top of my favorites list. It has a very sleek form and unlike most crib/bed combos, it looks great at all stages.
Electric BabyScale with Memory from Petit Terraillon
The clean design of this baby scale caught my eye in the midst of the chaos at the show. My favorite feature is that it calculates the weight difference each time you weigh your child.
Kiddo Kidkeeper
An innovative proximity alarm that can prevent children from getting lost, being snatched, and having accidents. Parents will love this one. I could see this being used in crowded places like theme parks or festivals. I know how hard it can be to keep your eye on your kids when you are outnumbered! My only suggestion would be to get rid of the cheesy stickers.

Time Magazine says that the new Bloch addition "at the Nelson-Atkins could make Steven Holl an architectural superstar", and from these photos they may have a case. If you happen to be in Kansas City, as a resident or tourist, then pay a visit because I believe exposing young minds to great architecture affects them in powerful and emotional ways unlike any other creative expression. One can only imagine the possibilities that could be born from a visit to the Nelson-Atkins.

Designs for Kids at ICFF
Check out Mocoloco's coverage of kid's designs at this year's ICFF in NY. They have an eye for great design, and design shows like ICFF can give you a good glimpse into what might be hot in the stores in the next few months. Just like a big car show, most things at ICFF are either new or in production, while other pieces are conceptual prototypes to show off a designer's vision (which may or not make it into actual production). What's even more amazing is the continuing growth of modern-designed options that are available to design-conscious parents these days.

Nursery AT Launches Nursery Radio
Earlier this week, the Nursery @ Apartment Therapy launched their first Nursery Radio episode. A great mixture of children's songs, storytelling, and interviews - if all episodes are like this first show, then you might find the program a peaceful diversion from TV cartoons and Radio Disney.
