Picks from Kind & Jugend by Rebecca Finell

by Robert on October 3, 2007

Rebecca Finell of BoonRebecca Finell, designer and co-founder of Boon, recently returned from the Kind & Jugend Children’s Show in Cologne, Germany.  As with many large international trade shows, the diversity and number of products on display are overwhelming, and we’re lucky to have Rebecca tell us about a few of her favorite finds.

Oolaalaa GlobeThe Oolaalaa Globe
A giant sitball made of memory foam that quickly returns to its original shape when you stand up. The Oolaalaa globe is covered in a high-resolution digital print that is so precise, you can actually read the names of rivers and cities. I sat on one at the show and it is more supportive than you would think it could be.  It’s a great concept to help kids learn geography and I love that every purchase benefits a good cause.

Crib and Bed by LeanderThe Leander Bed
I saw this bed last year and it is still at the top of my favorites list. It has a very sleek form and unlike most crib/bed combos, it looks great at all stages.

Baby Scale by Terraillon
Electric BabyScale with Memory from Petit Terraillon
The clean design of this baby scale caught my eye in the midst of the chaos at the show. My favorite feature is that it calculates the weight difference each time you weigh your child.

Kiddo Kidkeeper

Kiddo Kidkeeper
An innovative proximity alarm that can prevent children from getting lost, being snatched, and having accidents. Parents will love this one. I could see this being used in crowded places like theme parks or festivals. I know how hard it can be to keep your eye on your kids when you are outnumbered!  My only suggestion would be to get rid of the cheesy stickers.

Thanks, Rebecca!

I seem to recall a similar device that looked just like a watch – the advantage being that potential child snatchers might take it for a simple watch and not remove it. My only fear with this type of device is that parents and children won’t work on staying close. That said, I run into people all the time who prattle on in complete ignorance of the fact that I need to keep an eye on my child. It’s tough, but necessary. I also wonder about actually finding your child if someone grabs then or the run off. This definitely gives you the benifit of being in the know sooner rather than later, but in the case of an amusement park separation, how do you in what direction to look. It’s not exactly a GPS. On that note (sorr), I read an article by Barry Sonnefield that said his wife did get him a GPS watch. If they come in kid sizes and you have the means, it’s worth the investment to protect what you hold dearest.

After reading your Opinion on the Kiddo Keeper, I must say that you don’t need a GPS watch, because this Alarm is able to be set up to a minimum distance of 2meters. In a 2meter range, you obvious can see where your child is… but it was well pointed anyway.
